As the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) kicks off today, Thursday , April 24, 2025, the Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Osun State Command, Igbalawole Sotiyo, led a team to supervise some accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers in Osun State.

During the on-the-spot assessment, Commandant Sotiyo met with the State Coordinator of JAMB in the State , Mr Babatunde Jacob and assured him that NSCDC personnel deployed for the assignment will discharge their duties with a high level of professionalism to uphold the integrity of the examinations.

The Commandant also discussed strategies for effective collaboration between NSCDC and JAMB to prevent examination malpractices and ensure a smooth conduct of the exams.

Commandant Sotiyo advised candidates writing the exams to abide by the rules governing the examination, noting that NSCDC will not tolerate any act of indiscipline during the examination. “We will not hesitate to take action against anyone found engaging in malpractice,” he warned.

He further advised those who do not have business during the exams to stay clear of the premises while assuring JAMB staff of adequate protection of lives and property.

“Our personnel will ensure that all exam centers are secure, and candidates can focus on their exams without any distractions,” Commandant Sotiyo said.

Earlier, the State Commandant held a strategic meeting with Area Commanders and Divisional Officers across the state, where he emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and discipline in tackling malpractices during the exams.”We must ensure that the integrity of the examination is upheld,” he said.

Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig Gen Mohamed Marwa (rtd), has said the push for drug integrity tests for youth corps members, prospective couples and others is not punitive but to discourage substance abuse.

 

He added that it is also to provide early treatment for those who test positive for drugs before their condition degenerates into drug dependence and other health challenges.

 

Marwa stated this during a meeting with Brig Gen Olakunle Nafiu, the National Youth Service Corps director general. Nafiu led top NYSC officials on a courtesy visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, April 23.

 

The NDLEA boss said: “The drug scourge has continued to devastate our kids, families, communities, everywhere, there‘s nowhere you go in the country that you don‘t have a drug abuse problem. One in seven Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 uses drugs.

“You have mentioned our efforts to cut off access and availability of these drugs. Still, beyond that, we have to work with all stakeholders, including NYSC, to ensure a drastic reduction in the demand for drugs by our youths, and one of our strategies to address this is through our drug integrity test, which we’re advocating that NYSC should embrace for corps members.

“As I said, while we do drug supply reduction, we also do drug demand reduction through preventive measures, as well as counselling and rehabilitation. Now, these are important areas for further collaboration. You have introduced in the camps the war against drug abuse clubs, which is fantastic.

“Another important area of collaboration is the question of drug integrity tests for youth corps members. It‘s a major drug demand reduction effort.

“In the same way, if you are getting married, both the bride and the groom should bring a drug-free certificate. This is because it is always better to detect drug use early before it gets to addiction, which eventually could lead to psychiatric problems. It becomes a danger to the user and society.”

 

He said another area of collaboration is the posting of a sizable number of corps members who studied Guidance and Counselling, Psychology, Nursing and Psychiatry to NDLEA Counselling and Treatment Centres across the country as their place of primary assignment during their one-year national service.

 

He said this will enable the corps members to acquire knowledge and experience in rehabilitation and psychosocial services.

 

In his response, the NYSC DG described the drug integrity test as a fantastic idea and promised to study the NDLEA proposal for a possible collaboration.

 

Rivers State leads the country with 208,767 people living with HIV, followed closely by Benue State (202,346) and Akwa Ibom (161,597), according to the latest spectrum estimates from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS.

Mid-range prevalence is seen in Abia (54,655), Kaduna (54,458), Kano (53,972), Plateau (51,736), Borno (50,433) and Oyo (50,063). At the lower end of the spectrum are Kwara (20,259), Kebbi (19,339), Ekiti (18,857), Sokoto (15,223), Ebonyi (14,151), Zamfara (13,253) and Yobe (11,956).

In the past year, an estimated 43,683 Nigerians died from HIV-related causes—28,589 adults (13,650 males and 14,939 females) and 15,094 children aged 0–14. Despite these tragic losses, 1,753,425 people living with HIV now know their status, including 1,693,457 adults (579,209 males and 1,114,401 females) and 54,983 children.Traditional cuisine

Treatment coverage has expanded significantly: 1,735,808 people are currently on antiretroviral therapy—1,690,057 adults (577,632 males and 1,112,425 females) and 45,751 children. Of those on treatment, 1,160,256 were tested for viral suppression, and 1,112,339 achieved a suppressed viral load, demonstrating the impact of scale-up efforts.

However, critical gaps remain in preventing mother-to-child transmission. Although 93,186 pregnant women were identified as needing ART, only 31,095 received it—highlighting a shortfall in reaching this vulnerable group.

Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director-General of NACA, reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government has mobilized resources to avert any drug shortages.

“The Federal Executive Council approved $1.07 billion for healthcare reform under the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity programme, alongside ₦4.8 billion for HIV treatment. The National Assembly also allocated ₦300 billion to the health sector in the 2025 budget,” she said. These measures, she added, are aimed at closing funding gaps and ensuring the sustainability of Nigeria’s HIV response.

The 2025 Batch A, Stream 1 NYSC Orientation Course commenced on Wednesday, April 23rd, at the Bayelsa State Permanent Orientation Camp.

Prospective corps members arrived in their numbers and were warmly received by camp officials.

On arrival, they underwent routine security checks by personnel stationed at the gate. Refreshments were made available at the reception desk to ease their stress after long journeys from different parts of the country.

After the initial reception, the corps members proceeded to the accommodation section where they were allocated hostels by the camp officials. The process was orderly and efficiently managed by the accommodation team.

Meanwhile, the registration committee continued registering qualified prospective corps members. At the same time, platoon officers began documentation procedures for the issuance of NYSC kits and other camp essentials.

The prospective corps members expressed gratitude to the NYSC management for the warm and organized reception. Many praised the hospitality shown, especially the refreshments provided at the reception area.

in other news, the State Coordinator, Mrs Okpalifo Obiageli Charity has charged 2025 BATCH A, Stream 1 camp officials to imbibe professionalism, emotional intelligence and empathy in the discharge of their respective duties during the orientation course.

She gave this advice during her maiden meeting with the camp officials at NYSC permanent orientation camp Boro town, Bayelsa State on Tuesday 22/4/25.

The NYSC Boss emphasized on discipline, team work, as panacea for a hitch free and successful orientation course.

She enjoined the course participants that as mentors, they should show exemplary leadership and espirit de corps.

The State Coordinator used the opportunity to highlight key resolutions at the just concluded Annual Management Conference and 2025 Pre-orientation Workshop.

Mrs Okpalifo Obiageli again explained in detail the registration process commencing from the arrival of the prospective corps members at the camp gate.

Okpalifo urged the camp officials to always look out for corps members who may be sick and hiding their ailments for adequate attention.

The Coordinator also hinted on effective communication for smooth running of the camp. She stressed that the extant rules and regulations guiding orientation course still subsist and enjoined them to observe all the rules.

She warned against all forms of indiscipline elucidating that management will not tolerate any obnoxious behaviour.

Mrs Okpalifo Obiageli urged camp officials to be security conscious and be vigilant at all times.

She charged all camp officials to actively participate in all camp activities.

The Camp Director, Mrs Essien Ena Omawumi solicited for the support and cooperation of all camp officials to ensure a hitch free orientation course. She tagged the camp as ‘ camp of peace.’

The Camp Commandant, Capt AM Bello assured that military personnel will synergise with other security agencies to ensure a successful exercise.

Other heads of collaborating agencies and assignments expressed their readiness and that of personnel under them in the discharge of their duties as expected.

In her closing remarks, she thanked all camp officials for attending the meeting and encouraged them to be proactive.

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has revealed that over N10 million has been raised in just four days for Quadri Alabi, alleging that the police falsely claimed Alabi was 18 years old to prosecute him in court, even though he is only 17.

Effiong revealed this during an interview on Monday with Channels TV, where he and Alabi were both guests.

Alabi was arrested and charged in connection with a violent street fight in the Amukoko area of Lagos earlier this year. However, Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi later freed him following legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr. Babajide Martins.

Speaking on national TV, Effiong explained that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Amukoko Division subjected Alabi to an internal police trial, along with Inspector Odigbe Samuel and other officers. He described their actions as part of an “evil, sinister, oppressive, and corrupt scheme” to frame a teenager for armed robbery, instigated by rogue ‘area boys.’

According to Effiong: “The boy sitting next to me, Quadri Alabi, as you know, went viral in 2023 during one of Peter Obi’s campaign tours. He spontaneously jumped in front of the convoy, raised his hand, and the photo went viral. That moment changed his life. Donations were made, and he gained some popularity.

“Unfortunately, with that fame came harassment. Local area boys began extorting him, saying he hadn’t ‘settled’ them. They even told his mother to buy a cow, cook rice, and throw a feast for the community. When she refused, the threats continued.

“This is actually the second time these same individuals, with support from the Amukoko Police, targeted him. The first time, he was quietly detained. The second time, in January, he was returning home from work when he was arrested by area boys, specifically known as Leggy and Baba Waris, who accused him of ignoring them despite the money he had received from Peter Obi.

“They handed him over to the police, claiming he was involved in a street fight. His mother was told the same. She even confronted one of the area boys, who admitted it was about the money.

“Shockingly, he was detained for a full week before being taken to court on January 27. The DPO, CSP Ismaila Ulaniro, kept him in custody illegally during this period.”

Effiong continued: “They finally took him to the Magistrate Court in Apapa, alongside four adult men he had never met before. The police accused them of armed robbery said to have occurred on January 22 at 10 p.m. No identification parade was conducted, and there was no evidence linking him to the crime.”

On the issue of age falsification, Effiong said: “The police falsely claimed he was 18 in court documents. Why? Because if they had said he was 17, the court would have treated the matter differently—possibly not even remanding him in a regular prison. The magistrate noted this during the hearing but said the only information provided showed him as 18, so she had no reason to question it.”

Alabi himself recounted the experience: “I was just at the entrance of my house when the police came and arrested me. The area boys pointed me out. At the station, I was the youngest there. I was locked up with older men. They asked me what I did, and I said nothing. Before the arrest, the area boys had already taken my phone and the money in my pocket.”

Regarding the donations, Effiong added: “I can confirm that we’ve raised over N10 million in just four days for Quadri. The goal is to relocate him from Amukoko and to secure a source of income for his mother, who is a petty trader. This shows the strength of the Nigerian spirit.”
