    The Morality Ministry of Taliban, on Tuesday, dismissed more than 280 members of the security force for failure to grow a beard.

    Mohibullah Mokhlis, Director of Planning and Legislation at the ministry, told a press conference that their dismissal was in line with their interpretation of Islamic law.

    He further disclosed that officials had destroyed 21,328 musical instruments in the past year and prevented thousands of computer operators from selling “immoral and unethical” films in markets.

    Taliban stated that more than 13,000 people have been detained in Afghanistan for “immoral acts” in the past year.

    The Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and Propagation of Virtue said in its annual operations update that around half of those detained had been let go after 24 hours. It did not break down the type of the alleged offences or gender of the detainees.

    A data company, Statisense, on Tuesday, posted on their X handle a survey list that ranked Nigeria to be the 32nd smartest people in Africa.

    The data company released a list of the smartest people in Africa without Nigeria making the first 20 listed countries.

    The company stated that based on IQ data collected, Countries like Mauritius, Libya, Tunisia, Sudan, Chad, Seychelles, Senegal, Comoros, Madagascar, and Uganda are the first 10 smartest people in Africa.

    Netizens expressed their support for the IQ list. Saying they are not surprised to see Nigeria rank so low in the IQ data collected. Some of them faulted the APC government and supporters while others faulted Obidients.

    The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ogun State, Niyi Ijalaye, has slumped and died after a meeting at the headquarters in Abuja.

    A source who spoke to Channels TV revealed that the former Resident Electoral Commissioner had returned to his hotel room after the meeting before the incident happened.

    The cause of his death is yet unknown.

    The meeting presided over by the INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, centred on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as discussions on seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.

    Niyi Ijalaye, an Indigene of Ondo State was said to have participated actively during the meeting and was in good spirits before the death later in the evening.

    Abia state commissioner for information, Prince Okey Kalu, on Monday, confirmed that the state has recorded its first case of Monkeypox around Isiala Ngwa environs.

    He disclosed this during a press briefing on the outcome of the state Executive Council meeting, held yesterday in Umuahia.

    Kanu stated that out of the 13 recorded in the state, only one tested positive, nine tested negative, while two were awaiting classification.

    He, however, said that there was no casualty yet. He advised residents to maintain personal hygiene and keep social distancing. He said that a treatment centre had already been set up by the State Government at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH, Aba.

    Adding her voice, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Dr Agozi Azodo, highlighted the importance of personal hygiene in curtailing the spread of the deadly disease.

    She also advised residents especially farmers to minimize contact with animals.

    The former Director, Federal Ministry of Health, said the State Government was ready to deal with the possible outbreak of the disease, and asked residents to promptly report any suspected case.

    The SA disclosed that the State Government had concluded arrangements to renovate and retrofit 200 primary health centres across the state in 100 days. The project according to her will commence in the first week of September and delivered before December.

    The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Oyo State, Ajiboye Omodewu, is dead.

    The death of the APC leader occurred in the early hours of Monday in the faraway United States of America after a protracted illness.

    The Otu-Itesiwaju-born politician was a commissioner at different ministries, during the administration of late former governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

    He recently completed his law degree and law school.

    APC through it’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, on Monday mourned Omodewu stating that the party has lost a great leader.

    The continuous deteriorating state of the economy has forced some men to engage themselves in unimaginable menial jobs just to survive. It has gotten so bad that they accept to peel corn for roadside roasters.

    Most of these men are either unemployed or job seekers with family responsibilities on their shoulders. They have shoved their pride, rolled their sleeves and got dirty just to put food on the table for the family.

    It is gathered that some of these men get paid daily, weekly or monthly by roadside business women.

    Mr. Abednigo Okpana, who spoke to Vanguard said he was a hawker but had to sustain himself and his family by working as a helper in corn roasting for his madam.

    He said: “I hawk plantain chips for a living. The high cost of living which has also affected businesses resulted in my having low profit in the plantain chips business.

    “I have to take care of my aged parents and my wife and daughter. So I decided to serve as a helper in the corn roasting business alongside hawking. Here I am paid based on the amount of corn I roast.

    “Roasting five cobs of corn is N100. Then N1000 for peeling a bag of corn. I do my hawking in the morning and evening on days when my madam didn’t open for business.

    “I plan on saving to start my own business because corn is a seasonal food. I cannot sustain myself and my family with it in the long term.”

    Mrs. Judith Agbasi, a corn seller said: “It is not easy peeling and roasting corn for sale.

    “Many women with various health challenges are trying to make ends meet, especially those who are the breadwinners of their family.

    “That is why you see some corn sellers now employing helpers to do the roasting, peeling and selling to save them the cost of visiting the hospital every time.

    “Myself, my children do come to help me with the peeling while I do the roasting and selling. I also boil corn for sale.

    “Since it is a seasonal business, it is advisable to employ hands if you are situated in a place where business booms to save you from too much stress.”

    Mr. Femi Olorunsogo said he was surprised to see a man helping a woman roast corn for a fee.

    He said: “Right there at Ilasa, I wanted to buy corn. I was negotiating for two cobs to be sold at N300 but the man insisted on N400.

    “He now asked the woman beside him if he should sell the cobs of corn for N300. She agreed. I was curious so I asked him if the business was not his.

    “He replied he was not even related to the woman but worked as a helper who was paid after his job was done.

    “I have seen men doing women’s business like frying akara, and roasting corn but a helper in roasting corn is baffling. That is what the economy of the country has made many hardworking citizens resort to for survival.

    “How many people eat corn that this woman will make a profit and also pay a helper? Such a question begins to ring in your head when you encounter such a situation.

    “But the fact is that people prefer to eat corn and coconut or pea than go into a canteen to spend thousands of naira for just a plate of food which won’t even hold you up to an hour. At least the young man is not stealing.”

    The Oyo State Police Command has arrested eight suspected ritual killers, including suspects who murdered 14-year-old Malik Kareem. 

    The Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodele Sonubi, paraded the suspects at the command headquarters in Eleyele on Friday, August 16, 2024.

    Ayodele revealed that Adekunle sold Malik Kareem’s head and legs for N70,000 to Rashidat Akanji at Oje Market.

    The Commissioner said, “Further confessions revealed that on August 7, 2024, Adekunle and his accomplices killed Malik Kareem, severed his head and legs, and sold them to Rashidat Akanji at Oje Market for N70,000.

    “On August 11, 2024, at approximately 06:30hrs, a search warrant was executed at the suspects’ premises, where fresh flesh was recovered. Adekunle confessed that this flesh was part of Malik Kareem, whom they killed on August 7, 2024.

    “During the investigation, suspects Muniru Salawudeen, Rashidat Akanji, Ismail Olalekan, and Obaleye Sanmi were arrested. They confessed to buying various human parts for rituals from Adekunle Mohammed.

    “On August 10, 2024, at about 00:15hrs, Ayede reported an offensive odour emanating from a building owned by Muhammad Adekunle, who is not usually resident there but visits at odd hours

    “Operatives from Moniya Divisional Police Headquarters responded and discovered a dry well containing mutilated human remains.

    “The remains of three unidentified bodies were removed to the State Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy. Photographs were also taken,”

    Burkina Faso’s Defacto leader, Ibrahim Traore has rejected a financial assistance offer from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

    Tekedia reported that the military leader rejected the loan amidst economic challenges affecting his country.

    The IMF, known for providing financial support to countries in need, had approved a substantial arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility for Burkina Faso, aimed at addressing the country’s balance of payments problems and supporting economic resilience and poverty reduction efforts. However, President Traore’s administration has opted to turn down this offer.

    One of the key reasons cited for rejecting the IMF’s assistance is the belief that such aid could perpetuate economic dependency and limit the country’s control over its financial decisions. There is also a sentiment that accepting the aid could keep the country ensnared in a cycle of debt.

    This perspective aligns with a broader trend among some African leaders who are re-evaluating the long-term implications of international financial aid and expressing a preference for policies that promote autonomy and self-determination.

    Additionally, the decision reflects concerns about the potential for international financial institutions to influence domestic policy and priorities. By turning down the IMF assistance, Burkina Faso is asserting its financial sovereignty and demonstrating a commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its citizens above external pressures.

    Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola, on Friday, told the federal government to stop distributing palliatives to Nigerians and tackle insecurity bedevilling the country.

    Babalola spoke on Thursday when members of the Prestige Sisters League paid him a ‘Thank You’ visit on the ABUAD campus, The Cable reports.

    The legal luminary said the recent protest over hunger in the country was from a place of genuine concern.

    He lamented the insecurity in the country, adding that people have abandoned their farms for fear of the unknown.

    “Those who are complaining about hunger are doing so sincerely. They are hungry. A hungry man can go to any length to show his anger,” he said.

    “We do not need anybody to tell us that there is hunger in the country. The protest was genuine and the government should listen to them.

    “The duty of the government is the welfare of the people. The problem we have now is that people cannot move freely.

    “They have abandoned the farms. People are being killed in their farms and everybody wants to stay where they are safe. It is because the government has failed in this regard that we have hunger.

    “It is wrong for the government to be sharing garri, beans and rice as palliatives. They are turning the people into beggars. The government that is giving the people rice and beans is leading us to poverty.

    “The government is discouraging people from working, whereas, the government must provide an enabling environment for people to work and feed themselves.”

    On the recent calls for constitutional reform, Babalola agreed with the Patriots that a new constitution should be made. He suggests bringing back the 1963 constitution instead of any constitutional conference.

    Babalola said Tinubu should bring back the 1963 just like he reintroduced the old national anthem without any conference resolutions.

    Thailand’s parliament has picked Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of the country’s former leader Thaksin, as their new Prime Minister.

    At 37, will serve as the country’s youngest PM and the second woman in the post, after her aunt Yingluck.

    Her selection comes two days after former PM Srettha Thavisin was removed by a constitutional court for violating the constitution. Both are from the Pheu Thai Party, which came second in the 2023 election but formed a ruling coalition.

    Ms Paetongtarn is the fourth member of the Shinawatra clan to lead Thailand in the past two decades.

    She was educated in Thailand before proceeding to the University of Surrey in the UK for her Masters. She has played an advisory role in government before her selection.

    She joined Pheu Thai in 2021 and was appointed party leader in October 2023.
