    Tinubu Reunites Wike, Fubara, Rivers Lawmakers

    President Bola Tinubu on Thursday met with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and other members of the state assembly.

    It was gathered that, at the meeting, the President reconciled the parties whose dispute led to the declaration of a state of emergency in the state on March 18.

    During that declaration, Tinubu suspended the governor, his deputy Mrs Ngozi Odu, and the state House of Assembly, citing their inability to work together amidst growing security concerns in their state.

    Although none of the parties disclosed the outcome of the meeting, it appears to be a breakthrough in reconciliation efforts, as photographs released after the talks showed the president, governor, and minister smiling together.

    Sources at the presidency say the meeting helped to reconcile the factions involved in the dispute that has paralysed governance in the oil-rich state.

    A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Atu, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Atu, who represents the Enugu North/South Federal constituency in the Green Chamber, defected to the APC today, June 26. The speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read his defection letter on the floor of the House during plenary.

    In his letter of defection, Atu pointed out the leadership crisis rocking the Labour party as his reason for wanting to decamp. He claimed that the LP crisis had negatively affected his duties.

    Ali Isa, minority whip, protested the defection and demanded that the lawmaker’s seat be declared vacant.
    Abbas acknowledged his point of order but declined to rule on his demand.

    This comes barely 24 hours after two members of the house, PDP’s Peter Akpanke, who represents the Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwara federal constituency of Cross River State, and the Labour Party’s Paul Nnamchi, who represents the Enugu East/Isi-Uzo federal constituency, defected to the APC.

    The International Boxing Association (IBA) president, Umar Kremlev has called on Imane Khelif to return the gold medal she won during the 2024 Olympics held in France.

    Kremlev revealed this during an interview with Mail Sport where he stated that Khelif was disqualified from IBA events after two failed tests in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

    The Algerian boxer won the gold medal in the women’s 66kg event at the Paris Games by beating Yang Liu in the final.

    The 26-year-old made the headlines by winning the Olympic gold medal, just three years after the boxer had struggled in Tokyo.

    But her victory came under fierce criticism when IBA revealed she had failed gender eligibility tests twice at the previous World Championships.

    The IBA said Khelif was given a 21-day period to appeal her test results that showed that she had XY chromosomes, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS].

    But she did not appeal and was disqualified from the World Championships.

    Khelif was still allowed to compete by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) despite the controversy.

    Kremlev said: “The IOC is not fighting for the fairness in sport. The IOC is giving away medals based on their political interests.

    “Imane Khelif should be made to return the Olympic medal from Paris.”

    A suspected ritualist identified as Bobby was on Wednesday, June 19, arrested with the mutilated body of a six-year-old boy he allegedly k!lled in the Aritalin area of Ovom community in Yenagoa local government area of Bayelsa State.

    The suspect was reportedly apprehended while attempting to escape with the mutilated body of his victim.

    Residents of the area say the suspect who hails from the same Ovom community was intercepted around 8 pm by vigilant residents who raised an alarm after noticing his suspicious movements.

    The discovery of the boy’s mutilated body caused anger and tension in the Hausa community, and some people tried to attack the suspect. However, elders of the community quickly intervened and stopped the mob and subsequently handed the suspect over to the police.

    The spokesman of the Bayelsa state police command, Musa Mohammed, confirmed that the suspect had been taken into custody and “the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).”

    The Anambra State Government has directed residents and occupants of dilapidated buildings scattered across the state to repaint their structures.

    In a press statement released on Thursday, June 19, the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu said such dilapidated buildings with washed out paint deface the environment.

    Odimegwu said that the repainting of buildings will commence immediately in cities like Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi and Ekwuluobia axis, respectively, with the aim of achieving a clean, beautiful and eco-friendly environment in Anambra state. He revealed that a taskforce will start enforcing compliance to the new directive beginning from July 1.

    Odimegwu stated that the exercise is aimed at strengthening the existing building structures, improving the aesthetic ambience, and the green space of the state as enshrined in the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, Part 4 sec 79 (1-7).

    The statement in part reads, “Notice is hereby given to all residents and occupants of buildings which are in public view areas of the state with particular emphasis on Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi and Ekwuluobia respectively, that general house hold inspection on dilapidated and unpainted structures defacing the environment shall commence with immediate effect.

    This exercise is aimed at strengthening the existing building structures, improving the aesthetic ambience, and the green space of the state as enshrined in the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, Part 4 sec 79 (1-7).

    Hence, residents are enjoined to fully maintain, repaint (if necessary) their residential and commercial premises which are in public view (anyaora) areas.”

    Odimegwu added that the Anambra State Environmental Management Protection and Administration Law 2024 provides the legal framework for beautification and aesthetic face-lifting of the state.

    “Regulators will be embarking on field operations starting from July 1, 2025, for this particular purpose. Therefore, concerned individuals and corporate organisations within the purview as stated above are required to repaint their houses/buildings, especially those that have not been repainted in the last 10 years or buildings whose current paint is defacing the environment.

    “A clean, beautiful and eco-friendly Anambra is possible if we join hands together to improve her aesthetic ambience,” the statement added.

    A Florida Sheriff has threatened to kill extreme vi0lent ice protesters if they try to disrupt local authorities in his county from doing their job.

    Wayne Ivey, the sheriff of Brevard County, located east of Orlando, made the declaration during a press conference addressing the recent nationwide unr£st, including protests in Los Angeles following U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.

    Referring to the clashes in California, Sheriff Ivey stated that while peaceful protest is permitted, any esca!ation into viol£nce will be met with swift and severe consequences. He warned that actions such as resisting lawful orders, blocking traffic, or fleeing arr£st would result in immediate jail time.

    More forcefully, he said any physical assau!t on law enforcement, such as spitting on or striking officers, would result in the perpetrator not only being arr£sted but also hospitalized.

    Ivey issued his strongest warning to those who might engage in more extreme acts, such as pointing a weapon, hurling firebombs, or throwing bricks at officers. In such cases, he said, individuals “won’t need a jail cell” as the response would be fatal. “We’ll direct your family to your remains,” he said.

    Using stark language, Ivey described the approach as a return to “Old West” style law enforcement, warning that stepping out of line could leave someone “graveyard d£ad.”

    The sheriff’s comments come as protests continue across the United States in response to ICE raids and immigration policies. The demonstrations, which began in Los Angeles, have drawn national attention and sparked debate over federal enforcement tactics and local responses.

    While federal agents and military personnel have been deployed to manage unrest in cities like Los Angeles, Sheriff Ivey’s message makes clear that his jurisdiction will respond aggressively to any perceived threats to public safety or law enforcement personnel.

    Family of five lost in the Air India Flight 171 Crash

    A family of five from Banswara in Rajasthan were among the victims of the catastrophic India plane crash that occurred in Ahmedabad on Thursday, moments after takeoff.

    The deceased family from Banswara have been identified as Pratik Joshi, a software professional, his wife Komi Vyas, their twin sons Pradyut and Nakul, and their eldest daughter Miraya.

    The family was reportedly traveling together when the ill-fated aircraft, operating as flight AI171, crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area and erupted into flames.

    Pratik Joshi had been living in London for six years. He had long dreamed of building a life abroad together with his wife and three young children, who stayed back in India.

    This week was meant to be the start of a new chapter as he was finally bringing his wife and three children to join him abroad, to give them the life he had worked tirelessly to build for 9-years in the UK.

    It was also gathered that his wife Dr Komi Vyas, had tendered her resignation just two days ago to start a fresh life with her family. Sadly, she perished with her family in the plane crash.

    They also posed for a selfie and sent it to relatives before the flight took off.

    The news of their death threw the whole town of Banswara and their former colleagues into mourning as they described them as kind and peace loving family.

    An Air India 171 flight to London with 242 passengers onboard crashed on Thursday afternoon shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad.

    Local residents reported 3 loud explosions followed by smoke. More than 5 fire engines were deployed as crews battled the blaze and began rescue operations.

    It was gathered that the plane crashed on top of the dining area of a medical college hostel. It was unclear if any medical students were present inside the building at the time of the crash.

    The airline said the Gatwick Airport-bound flight was carrying 242 passengers and crew. Of those, Air India said there were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the crash “heartbreaking beyond words.”

    “In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected,” he said in a social media post.

    “The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement.

    Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation, told AP that Air India flight 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off at 1:38 p.m. local time. He said 244 people were on board and it was not immediately possible to reconcile the discrepancy with Air India’s numbers.

    All efforts were being made to ensure medical aid and relief support at the site, India’s Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu posted on X. The Indian army said in a statement that its teams were assisting civil authorities to clear debris and help treat the injured.

    The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 30-year-old Mavis Nkrumah for allegedly pouring acid on her ex-boyfriend, Gideon Frimpong, during a confrontation over their breakup.

    Police reports indicate that the incident occurred after the former couple met to resolve ongoing issues related to the end of their relationship.

    The discussion reportedly escalated into a heated argument, during which Ms. Nkrumah is said to have attacked Mr. Frimpong, a 29-year-old taxi driver, with the corrosive substance.

    Mr. Frimpong sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical staff report that he is in stable condition but will require ongoing care due to the extent of the burns.

    Following the attack, Ms. Nkrumah attempted to flee the scene but was subsequently apprehended by police. She remains in custody as investigations continue

    Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to be overconfident about winning the 2027 presidential election, despite endorsements from 22 All Progressives Congress (APC) governors.

    Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the seasoned lawmaker, who has spent nearly two decades in the National Assembly, said such political endorsements don’t always guarantee election victory.

    He referenced the 2015 election, where former President Goodluck Jonathan lost to Muhammadu Buhari despite being endorsed by 22 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors.

    “Jonathan had 22 governors then endorsing him like was done now. And what happened? Jonathan lost woefully. A lot of money was spent. Even the election was shifted but we are not learning our lessons. I pity Mr President,” Ndume said.

    Ndume, a senior member of the APC, revealed that he does not support the recent endorsement of Tinubu, citing Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, rising cost of living, and increasing insecurity.

    He added that many Nigerians are losing hope in Tinubu’s so-called “Renewed Hope” administration.

    “Nigerians cannot see any hope, they are doubting the Renewed Hope,” he said.

    The senator also shared that he walked out of the Banquet Hall at the Presidential Villa during the endorsement announcement.

    According to him, he had attended a summit but left after realizing that it had turned into a political endorsement event.

    “I was there but that was not why I was there; I was there for a summit, and when I realised that it was not a summit and voice vote was put about the endorsement of Mr President, I just left, and that does not mean I am not an APC member. The majority had its way but few of us felt that was not right,” Ndume explained.

    “It happened before, not once, not twice. It happened during Jonathan. That does not mean anything. Politicians are decamping but the people who are the voters are not decamping,”

    He warned the APC and President Tinubu not to confuse political endorsements with support from Nigerians.

    The endorsement by 22 APC governors, which took place on May 22, 2025, positioned Tinubu as the party’s preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential race.
