    Breaking: Tinubu appoints new NNPC boss, sacks kyari

    In a sweeping reconstitution of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited board, President Bola Tinubu has removed the chairman, Pius Akinyelure and the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari.

    Consequently, the President appointed Bashir Ojulari as the new CEO, effective from April 2, 2025.

    Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed the development in a statement he signed in the early hours of Wednesday titled, ‘President Tinubu reconstitutes NNPC limited board, appoints new Chairman, Group CEO.’

    “President Tinubu removed all other board members appointed with Akinyelure and Kyari in November 2023.

    “The new 11-man board has Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the Group CEO and Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman,” the statement reads.

    Adedapo Segun, who replaced Umaru Ajiya as the chief financial officer last November, has been appointed to the new board.

    Six board members, non-executive directors, represent the country’s geopolitical zones.

    They are Bello Rabiu representing the North West, Yusuf Usman representing the North East, and Babs Omotowa, a former managing director of the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas, who represents North Central.

    “President Tinubu also appointed Austin Avuru as a non-executive director from the South-South, David Ige as a Non-executive director from the South West, and Henry Obih as a non-executive director from the South East.

    “Mrs Lydia Shehu Jafiya, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, will represent the ministry on the new board, while Aminu Ahmed will represent the Ministry of Petroleum Resources,” Onanuga stated.

    All the appointments are effective today, April 2.

    President Tinubu, invoking the powers granted under Section 59, subsection 2 of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021, emphasised that the board’s restructuring is crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, restoring investor confidence, boosting local content, driving economic growth, and advancing gas commercialisation and diversification.

    He also handed out an immediate action plan to the new board “to conduct a strategic portfolio review of NNPC-operated and Joint Venture Assets to ensure alignment with value maximisation objectives.”

    Since 2023, the Tinubu administration has implemented oil sector reforms.

    Onanuga said that in 2024, NNPC reported $17bn in new investments within the sector.

    “The administration now envisions increasing the investment to $30bn by 2027 and $60bn by 2030.

    “The Tinubu administration targets raising oil production to two million barrels daily by 2027 and three million daily by 2030.

    “Concurrently, the government wants gas production jacked to 8 billion cubic feet daily by 2027 and 10 billion cubic feet by 2030,” he explained.

    Furthermore, he said the President expects the new board to “elevate NNPC’s share of crude oil refining output to 200,000 barrels by 2027 and reach 500,000 by 2030.”

    The new board chairman, Ahmadu Kida, is from Borno State. He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he received a degree in civil engineering in 1984.

    Kida also obtained a postgraduate diploma in petroleum engineering from the Institut Francaise du Petrol in Paris.

    He began his career in the oil industry at Elf Petroleum Nigeria and later joined Total Exploration and Production as a trainee engineer in 1985.

    Musa became Total Nigeria’s Deputy Managing Director of Deep Water Services in 2015.

    In 2024, he became an Independent Non-Executive Director at Pan Ocean-Newcross Group.

    The Presidency stated that apart from his oil industry career, Ahmadu Kida is a former basketballer and the President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation board.

    Meanwhile, the new NNPC Limited Group CEO, Ojulari, hails from Kwara State.

    Until his new appointment, He was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company.

    His Renaissance recently led a consortium of indigenous energy firms in the landmark acquisition of the entire equity holding in the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, worth $2.4bn.

    Like Kida, Ojulari is also an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, having graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

    He worked for Elf Aquitaine as the first Nigerian process engineer to begin a stellar career in the oil sector.

    From Elf, Ojulari joined Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd in 1991 as an associate production technologist.

    Apart from working in Nigeria, he worked in Europe and the Middle East in different capacities as a petroleum process and production engineer, strategic planner, field developer, and asset manager.

    In 2015, Ojulari became the managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company.

    During his career, he was chairman and member of the board of trustees of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE Nigerian Council) and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

    “President Tinubu thanked the old board members for their dedicated service to NNPC Limited, particularly their efforts in rehabilitating the old Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, which enabled them to resume petroleum product production after prolonged shutdowns.

    “He wished them well in their future endeavours,” the statement concluded.

    The arrival of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who made her entrance in a white helicopter, sparked a wave of cheers and applause from her enthusiastic supporters.

    The sight of the senator descending from the sky was a powerful symbol of her connection with the people, who expressed their unwavering loyalty and admiration for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) representative.

    Upon her arrival, she was heard saying: “Yesterday, we heard on the news that rallies and gatherings will not be allowed, that roads will be blocked, and convoys leading into the state will not be allowed. I knew that we were the targets. But then I said, this is not political season, this is not campaign time,” the lawmaker told her supporters and constituents.

    “We are not having a rally. This is just me, the Senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – the Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am breaking no law. This is Nigeria. We have the right to be free, to express our choice in gatherings and celebrations.

    Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru has arrested six commissioners over alleged involvement in breach of a contract for the construction of 140 housing units for Izzo and Amaze communities.

    The arrested commissioners are Professor Omari Omaka (Tertiary Education), Victor Chukwu (Environment), Ifeanyi Ogbuewu (Culture and Tourism), Uchenna Igwe (Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Moses Ekuma (Health) and Felix Igboke (Project Monitoring).

    The Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, Mr Timothy Nwachi, was also suspended.

    It was gathered that the affected commissioners before their arrest, were declared wanted by the state government.

    The governor, who spoke to newsmen in Abakaliki through the Chairman of the State Executive Council Committee on Izzo and Amaze Housing Project, Ilang Donatus, said the government felt that the affected commissioners and contractors have breached the terms and conditions of the contract given to them by the government.

    It was gathered that the affected commissioners and the contractors were accused of sabotaging the plan of the governor, Francis Nwifuru, to commission the housing units to mark his two years anniversary in the state.

    “The governor is not happy over the pace of the work which ought to have been completed. The government has decided to clamp down on the contractors and commissioners who were mandated to supervise those projects.

    “As you can see, our governor is a man with a passionate heart, he likes giving succour, hence the building of those houses for the victims of the communal crisis.

    “He is not happy that the project is delayed and has ordered the arrest of all the commissioners who were supposed to ensure the speedy completion of the housing units,” Donatus said.

    The Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilisation, Ebonyi Central, Mrs Maria Okohu who is member of the Executive Council Committee, said that non-completion of the projects by the contractors and the failure of some of the commissioners to strictly supervise them as directed by the government is an act of sabotage.

    The governor, through the vommittee, insisted that the arrests will continue until all the commissioners and contractors involved are brought to book and as well do the needful.

    It was gathered that the Nigeria Police has equally issued invitation letters to some of the fleeing commissioners and contractors who where not at home at the time the committee visited.

    A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has suggested that Nigeria is not improving anytime soon.

    Effiong claimed that the rot, corruption, and partisanship in the police are despicable.

    He made the assertion in a post on his X handle on Tuesday.

    The statement comes after the police called for the cancellation of the Okene rally in honor of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan based on an intelligence report.

    The Kogi State Police Command also called on the organizers of the planned rally to cancel the event in the interest of peace in the state.

    The Kogi State Government had banned rallies and public gatherings in the state over alleged “security reports.”

    The government also stopped fishing and other activities, lamenting that fishing activities had resulted in the loss of two lives in Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette, all in Kogi Local Government Area in Kogi West.

    Earlier, Akpoti-Uduaghan said that she would not back down on her plan to return to her constituency for the Sallah break.

    She also urged her supporters to discard speculations circulating that she had canceled her scheduled visit.

    However, the human rights lawyer said that the organizers should ignore the “useless” statement and proceed with their rally.

    He said: “Nigeria is not improving anytime soon.

    “The rot, corruption, and partisanship in the police are despicable.

    “The organizers should ignore this useless statement and proceed with their rally.

    “The courts and the law have made it clear that the only role of the police in political rallies is to provide adequate security, and that the police cannot disrupt rallies because of alleged apprehension of hijack or violence by ‘hoodlums.’

    “I urge Senator Natasha and her supporters to defy the police and the governor.”

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that he jokingly threatened to sack the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, if his policies did not align with the political interests of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

    The President made the remark at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when Wike led a delegation of prominent FCT residents on a Sallah homage to mark the end of Ramadan fasting and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

    Tinubu recalled how Wike approached him with a request to remove the FCT from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) to allow for greater financial flexibility and infrastructure development.

    “I remember the day Nyesom Wike came to me and said, ‘Please, take us out of this problem of Treasury Single Account (TSA) so that I can do more work and achieve more,’” Tinubu stated.

    He further recounted how he challenged Wike on the potential political implications of his policies.

    “And he presented it, and I threw in my own political guide: ‘Would that give me any opportunity for my party (APC) to win the election in FCT?’”

    “I said, ‘I know where you are coming from, your own party (PDP) or my party. If this thing goes too much in your own favour, you will lose your job.’ Then he said, ‘Okay, we settle that, Oga.’”

    President Tinubu commended Wike for implementing policies that have transformed the FCT, particularly in infrastructure, health, and education.

    “He came up with a lot of good ideas to liberate the bureaucracy, bring forward-looking, progressive thinking to the administration, and provide opportunities for many who would have been hindered by property rights,” he noted.

    According to the President, Wike’s initiatives have led to: The revitalization of the Vice-President’s residence, which had been abandoned for years. Rehabilitation of health centers and improvement of health services for FCT residents. Upgrading of school infrastructure and teacher welfare programs.

    “Thank you, Wike,” Tinubu concluded, acknowledging the minister’s efforts.

    The President’s remarks highlight the interplay between governance and political strategy, underscoring the need for policy alignment with party interests.

    While Wike, a prominent People’s Democratic Party (PDP) member, has maintained that his focus is on FCT development, his collaboration with the APC-led administration continues to spark political debate within opposition circles.
