    SPORT NPFL: Rivers United to unveil new head coach, Finidi Thursday

    Rivers United will unveil their new head coach, Finidi George, on Thursday.

    DAILY POST reports that the 54-year-old will take over the reign at the former Nigeria Premier Football League champions following Stanley Eguma’s sacking towards the end of last season.

    The unveiling ceremony will hold at Rivers United’s secretariat in Port Harcourt.

    Finidi is returning to the dugout few weeks after quitting his position as Super Eagles head coach.

    The former Ajax winger managed nine-time NPFL champions, Enyimba for three years before moving up to coach the Super Eagles.

    Finidi masterminded Enyimba’s title success in the 2022/23 season.

    Rivers United finished in a disappointing eighth position in the NPFL last term.

    Tinubu gives 48-hour ultimatum for new minimum wage

    President Bola Tinubu has given the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, a 48-hour ultimatum to come up with the cost implications on the new minimum wage.

    This was revealed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

    Idris stated this while briefing State House Correspondents after a meeting the negotiation team had with the President at Aso Rock.

    He said: “All parties to the negotiation of the new minimum wage would work together with the organised labour to present a new minimum wage for Nigerians in one week.

    “All of us will work together assiduously within the next one week to ensure that we have a new wage for Nigeria that is acceptable, sustainable and also realistic.”

    The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC, have called off the strike which began on Monday for one week, to enable further negotiations with the Federal Government.

    Minimum Wage: FG, Organised Labour sign agreement

    The Federal Government and the Organised labour, on Monday night signed an agreement over the minimum wage controversy.

    The agreement was signed after a marathon meeting brokered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

    DAILY POST reports that the meeting was convened in response to the nationwide strike which grounded activities across the country.

    Details of the agreement below:

    RESOLUTIONS REACHED AT THE MEETING BETWEEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE ORGANISED LABOUR HELD ON MONDAY 3RD JUNE, 2024

    Further to the negotiation by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) and subsequent withdrawal of Labour from negotiation, the Leadership of the National Assembly intervened on 2nd June, 2024. The Organised Labour declared nationwide strike on Monday, 3rd June, 2024 to drive home its demands.

    2. The Federal Government, in the National interest, convened a meeting with Labour held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Monday 3rd June, with a view to ending the strike action.

    3. After exhaustive deliberation and engagement by both parties, the following resolutions were reached:

    1. The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000;

    II. Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet everyday for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage;

    III. Labour in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment in (ii) above undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment; and

    IV. No worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.

    Tinubu needs ‘war cabinet’ to save Nigerian economy — Labour Party chieftain Ezeh

    The President of the Ebonyi Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, EBCIMA, Dr Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, has urged President Bola Tinubu to rejig his cabinet to save the Nigerian economy and unite the country.

    Speaking with journalists in Enugu on Monday, Ezeh who is a chieftain of the Labour Party, stated that Tinubu’s administration has been suffering from “announcement effect” due to the unplanned and sudden removal of petrol subsidy which tumbled an already fragile economy.

    According to Ezeh: “The current president promised to continue from where Buhari left off, and he is indeed making efforts to fulfil that promise. However, it’s essential to reflect on the lessons we’ve learned from waiting for competence to emerge. We spent eight years waiting for Buhari’s tenure to end, only to find ourselves facing an even deeper nightmare.

    “President Tinubu began his administration on somewhat shaky ground, falling into what economists call ‘announcement effects’ with his initial policy moves. While many Nigerians wanted an end to the subsidy conundrum, they also desired a well-thought-out process, shared vision, and collective understanding of the pains involved in reform. Unfortunately, the abrupt removal of subsidies without adequate communication will likely haunt this administration throughout its tenure.”

    Speaking on the way out of the current economic crisis in the country, Ezeh advised the president to infuse competent hands into his administration, warning that unless drastic measures were taken, the current suffering poses a serious socio-political threat to Nigeria’s corporate existence.

    “Leadership should involve guiding citizens through the dark nights of necessary reforms. The suffering, tone-deafness of political class, rampant corruption, and debilitating economic challenges are adversities that may ultimately unite Nigerians.

    Yobe State House of Assembly says it has passed eight out of 10 bills it received, 10 resolutions, as well as petitions within one year.

    The Speaker of the House, Rt Honourable Chiroma Buba Mashio disclosed this while speaking at a one year anniversary celebration of the 8th Assembly held at the chambers of the House.

    Mashio said some of the bills that were successfully passed by the House are that of Hisbah Commission, State Public Private Partnership and Investment Promotion Agency, State University Amendment Law, 2024 Finance and Appropriation bill, as well as the 2024 local governments’ harmonized finance and appropriation bill.

    He then thanked the staff and the members of the House for their dedication and commitment in the discharge of their legislative functions.

    The speaker also commended the State Governor, Mai Mala Buni for strengthening the cordial working relationship with the legislature and prompt attention given to the bills and House resolutions that were passed and transmitted to the executive arm of government for action.

    “He is abroad because he knows that Nigerian law can’t catch up with him there. He is enabling VeryDarkMan but can’t come to Nigeria. I dare him to come to Nigeria. Is he a saint?     LAGOS—The maid of the former Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian e-commerce giant, Konga, the late Nick Imudia (names withheld), has disclosed the last conversation she had with her boss before news of his death was announced last week.

    Vanguard, meanwhile, gathered that the late Imudia’s family had requested his body for burial.

     

    The maid, according to a close friend of the deceased, who spoke with Vanguard on the condition of anonymity, said late Imudia called her a day earlier and handed her a piece of paper with five telephone numbers, including that of his brother in the United States of America.

     

    According to the deceased’s friend, “She said Nick told her to keep the numbers, that she would need them at the appropriate time. Thereafter, she said he went into the bathroom and heard the shower running, indicating that he was having a bath.

     

    “She said after some time, she observed that the shower was still running and wondered what he could still be doing for so long. She knocked on the door, but there was no response and she left.

     

    Moments later, she said the private guard knocked on the door and informed her to come and see what had happened to Nick. She rushed downstairs and found him in a horrible state. Immediately, she rushed upstairs and still met the shower on. By the time she opened the door, she discovered there was nobody in there.”

     

    Meanwhile, the family, according to the deceased’s friend, had requested the release of Imudia’s body for burial.

    Regina Agbo, an Abuja resident, has narrated how N1.3 million vanished from her Zenith Bank account after an Eco Bank ATM retained her card.

     

    Agbo told FIJ that Zenith Bank and Eco Bank asked her to visit each other several times but it all yielded no success despite involving the police.

     

    She said she was at an Eco Bank branch in Wuse 2 on March 9, 2023, to transfer some money when the machine swallowed her card.

    When she inserted her card the first time, the ATM rejected it. On the second attempt, she said, her card refused to come out.

    Being her salary account and one she’d been saving her son’s tuition in, she waited for a while because she was not sure if the machine had trapped her card or if it was a network issue.

    She said that while she was waiting, she saw a colleague on the road who gave up their card upon request.

    “When I inserted my colleague’s card, the ATM rejected it. I bade them farewell and let them know I could not leave because of the amount in the account,” Agbo told FIJ.

    When she couldn’t wait any longer as it was getting late, Agbo called a security official of the Eco Bank branch to confirm if her card had been retained by the ATM, and he did confirm it was trapped.

    According to Agbo, the security official inserted his card into the ATM, and it accepted it. He then told her to leave, saying the card was safe.

    A security official said there was nothing they could do and that I should come back the next day. The following day, I went there. The staffer in charge of the ATM said they learned of what had happened but didn’t find a card when they checked the ATM.

     

    “I asked for the CCTV footage, but the bank said I needed a police letter and a court document for that. The police collected money from me, but I didn’t see any results. They even said I should pay N150,000 for them to track the account that received the money. I told them I didn’t have, and they said there was nothing they could do.

    In response to the rumour, the family told the public that the veteran actor is alive.

     

    The actor’s son, Soji Jacobs, confirmed to Channels Television that his father is “very much alive.”

    The Action People’s Party (APP) has said that the alleged silence of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the Department of State Service (DSS), over the deadly bomb blast by some protesters in Rivers State was becoming a stain on the image President Bola Tinubu-led government.

     

    The opposition party said this while reacting to the detonation of an explosive device during a protest march in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Tuesday, by supporters of a gladiator in the Rivers political crisis, culminating in the death of one person and others seriously injured.

     

    APP, at a press briefing by Comrade Achilike A, said the deafening silence of the security agencies which are expected to take action against the masterminders and perpetrators of the violent incident in Rivers State was casting aspersions on not just them alone but the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of Tinubu of being insensitive to the security of lives and property of people of the state.

     

    It said though Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the Chief Security Officer of the State but he lacks powers to command the office of the NSA, Police and DSS, hence only President Tinubu who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces can direct the heads of the security agencies to bring those behind the dastardly act to book.

     

    “We as an opposition party are worried about the continued silence of the NSA, IGP, CP and DSS since Tuesday when protesters believed to supporters of the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike allegedly detonated an explosive device in Rivers State, killing one person and injuring several others.
