    Sad: Scores Killed As Terrorist Bombs Wedding In Borno State

    Many persons have reportedly lost their lives in Gwoza, a town in Borno State, after a female suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a wedding venue killing several wedding guests and injuring many others.

    According to sources, the bomber was carrying a baby on her back when she stormed the venue and detonated the IED at the wedding held today, Saturday, in Tashan Mararaba near the Fire Service in Gwoza town.

    The number of dead persons is yet to be ascertained but several of the injured persons are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Gwoza including this source.

    A security source told Daily Trust that it was not clear whether it was a bomb blast or suicide bombers.

    We had twin blasts today; the first occurred around Hausari and the second around Mararaba area where people sell bicycles and items,” the source said.

    Soldiers have reportedly taken over the streets of Gwoza.

    Meanwhile, another bomber who disguised as a mourner, has detonated another explosive device in Gwoza LGA as the people were preparing for the funeral of the victims killed in an attack few hours ago.

    Police Arrest 985 Phone Snatchers In Kaduna

     

    The Kaduna State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has reported the arrest of a minimum of 985 phone thieves, 73 criminals involved in armed robberies, and 70 suspects implicated in kidnappings over the previous sixty days.

     

    Reports says that the State Commissioner of Police, Ali Dabigi, confirmed this achievement during a press conference on Thursday in the city.

     

    Dabigi also expressed gratitude towards pivotal figures and organizations whose cooperation was crucial in achieving these successes over the last two months.

    “In the last two months, 985 suspected phone snatchers, 73 armed robbery suspects and 70 kidnap suspects were arrested, while nine bandits were neutralised.

     

     

    “Five AK 47 rifles; 7 locally-made arms; 1,817 rounds of live ammunition; and eight vehicles of different brands were recovered, while eight suspects were arrested in connection with car theft.

    “Seven motorcycles of different brands, one tricycle, and 29 rustled cattle were also recovered, while one suspected railway vandal was arrested.

    These achievements are part of the testament to the hard work and dedication of the officers and men of the police command in Kaduna.

     

     

    “We remain committed to serving and protecting the people of Kaduna state with integrity and professionalism,” he said.

    He mentioned that the ongoing backing, direction, and leadership from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, have been crucial in guiding the command towards improved efficiency and effectiveness.

    The Police Commissioner also requested continued backing and dedication from the Kaduna State Government to boost the state’s security.

    Two officers of the Nigeria Police Force were reportedly murdered on Friday night when a group of dangerous criminals attacked a police checkpoint at the well-known Opobo Junction, near the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway in Abia State.

     

    Another officer reportedly sustained some injuries from the attack, which unsettled residents of the area.

     

    It was reported that the police were stationed at the junction for their regular evening patrol before the assailants attacked them.

    A witness described how the attackers, who were armed and dangerous, arrived in a Sienna SUV.

     

     

    He explained that just a few minutes into the police officers’ regular night shift, multiple police squads arrived in the area as people began to evacuate the scene.

    SaharaReporters quoted the witness as saying that the event led to widespread panic, forcing local businesses and market vendors to shut down, with some even leaving their goods behind to find safety

    The latest attack on security officials is coming a month after gunmen attacked a military checkpoint at the Obikabia Junction in Aba, Abia State.

     

     

    The attackers, who also set fire to the military vehicle, were believed to be carrying out the sit-at-home order issued by IPOB across the Southeast region to commemorate Biafra Day, a holiday celebrated in the area every year.

    The heavily armed individuals, dressed in black, were reportedly spotted firing at the junction intermittently.

    The Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Abraham Amah, has condemned the Labour Party-led government, particularly its handling of public servants and infrastructure projects.

    Expressing deep concern over the situation, Amah said that the LP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, should be ashamed.

     

    The PDP chieftain fumed over the government’s decision to relieve the permanent secretaries in the state of their duties without a public inquiry.

    Last year, a circular dated August 30, 2023, and signed on August 31 by the state Head of Service, Joy Maduka, read, “Following the ongoing reorganisation in the Abia State Public Service and in line with the provision of the Abia State Public Service Rules Nos. 02801 and 02803, I write to inform you that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State has directed the disengagement of all staff employed into the Abia State Public Service from January, 2023 to date.”

     

     

    However, speaking with Punch, Amah said, “I am profoundly ashamed of what is happening in Abia State. If Abia State is a miniature of the governance Peter Obi promises for Nigeria, then it spells total failure.”

    Amah also lamented the inadequate support for education, healthcare, energy, and security sectors, all of which he argued were critical for improving citizens’ welfare.

    He said, “This is a government that came on board and suspended all the permanent secretaries, suspended everybody. One year later, they sacked them, without any public inquiry or anything, without giving anything to the public.

     

     

    “So, what is the basis? Why do you think that tomorrow, those 15,000 workers who lost their jobs will want to vote for the Labour Party? Even Peter Obi should be ashamed of what is happening in Abia State.

     

    “It’s very embarrassing; I am very ashamed of what is happening in Abia State, because if Abia State is a sample of the kind of government people expect Peter Obi to bring in Nigeria, then they are a total failure.

    “So what is good about the government? This is a government that has already sacked about 15,000 workers, under the guise that they did not merit their jobs.

     

     

    “They have done nothing to create jobs; they do nothing to support and improve businesses and the standard of living of the people, to improve the education sector, health sector, energy, security, and care for the vulnerable.”

    The United Nations (UN) has claimed that it discovered five bombs in a wall of Mosul’s Al-Nuri mosque, allegedly planted by the Islamic State (ISIS) group years ago.

     

    The UNESCO team, conducting restoration work in the northern Iraqi city, found these large-scale devices designed to cause significant destruction to the site.

     

    he agency’s representative informed AFP on Friday that the explosives were located in the southern wall of the prayer hall.

    Naija News understands that the Al-Nuri mosque and the leaning minaret Al-Hadba, both significant historical structures, were destroyed during the battle to liberate the city from IS.

    The Iraqi army has accused IS of planting explosives at the site and detonating them.

    UNESCO has been actively involved in the restoration of this site and other architectural heritage in Mosul, much of which was devastated during the 2017 battle for the city.

    “The Iraqi armed forces immediately secured the area, and the situation is now fully under control,” UNESCO noted.

    According to the report, one of the explosives was removed, but four others remain connected to each other and are expected to be cleared in the coming days.

    “These explosive devices were hidden inside a wall, which was specially rebuilt around them: it explains why they could not be discovered when the site was cleared by Iraqi forces in 2020,” the agency said.

    Iraqi General Tahseen al-Khafaji, representative of the Joint Operations Command of different Iraqi forces, verified the finding of “multiple explosive devices from ISIS jihadists in Al-Nuri mosque.”

    Reports had it that it was in the Al-Nuri mosque that Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the former leader of IS, declared the formation of the group’s “caliphate” in July 2014.

    The jihadists seized extensive areas of land in Iraq and the nearby Syria, which they governed with cruelty.

    In 2017, Iraqi forces, supported by a US-led coalition, expelled IS from Mosul.

    The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has alleged that there is a plan to frame a prominent opposition lawmaker with fabricated charges.

    CUPP claims that Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesman for a group of 60 opposition lawmakers, is being targeted due to his stance on the political crisis in Rivers State and his advocacy for democracy.

    The coalition, representing opposition parties in Nigeria, has called on the Inspector General of Police and the Federal Capital Territory police commissioner to investigate the matter.

    In a statement, CUPP spokesman Mark Adebayo said the group had received intelligence about the alleged plot and warned that any attempt to frame Ugochinyere would bring much public disdain and condemnation.

    The statement praised Ugochinyere’s pro-democracy efforts, describing him as a long-standing activist and member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). CUPP said Ugochinyere’s advocacy should be applauded as actions in defence of public interest and Nigeria’s stability

    Anthony Joshua has urged Tyson Fury to fight him while both boxers are still “fresh”, but says he will not “sit around and wait” for his fellow British heavyweight.

    Joshua, 34, will challenge Daniel Dubois for the IBF world title on 21 September at Wembley Stadium.

    Fury, 35, will face Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch in December – a win for the Morecambe fighter and Joshua could set up a blockbuster undisputed fight between the pair.

     

    The super-fight, potentially the biggest and most lucrative bout in the division, has been mooted for several years but has stalled during negotiations.

    With the recent investment into boxing by Saudi Arabia, however, there is new hope the long-awaited bout will finally materialise.

     

    It’s a fight that’s been brewing for a long time,” Joshua told BBC Sport on Wednesday.

     

    I can’t wait until I’m 50 to fight Fury because I’d have had so many wars, I can’t sit around and wait, I’ve got to continue to fight.”

    Joshua is on a four-fight winning streak and will become a three-time champion if he defeats Londoner Dubois.

    Watford-born Joshua has faced an intense level of scrutiny for the majority of his career but says he never doubted himself after losing a second consecutive fight to Usyk in 2022.

    “The only time it’s over for me, at any level, is when I say it is,” Joshua said.

    “I don’t believe anyone can tell me enough is enough – I believe I belong at the top.”

    After two fights in Saudi, Joshua returns to home soil and will compete in front of at least 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, the same venue where he defeated Wladimir Klitschko in an epic bout in 2017.

    He is favourite to overcome Dubois but having sparred several rounds together in the past, Joshua says he will not underestimate the champion.

    Dubois, 26, beat Filip Hrgovic for the IBF ‘interim’ title on 1 June and was elevated to world champion when Ukrainian Usyk vacated his title.

    “He’s got a good mindset, aggressive, good lead hand, good backhand, dips and throws the right and over the top very well and does the basics pretty well as well, he’s a very well-rounded fighter,” Joshua said.
