    Goodluck Jonathan’s minister of Police Affairs and two-time governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe State, Adamu Maina Waziri, has defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

    Waziri announced his resignation at Dogotebo Ward in Potiskum Local Government Area on Tuesday, stating it was a difficult decision to leave the party after many years of service and loyalty.

    “I have decided to resign my membership because of the provision in the party’s constitution, which requires me to come to my ward — Dogotebo in Potiskum, located in a primary school that is older than me — to submit my resignation letter and formalise the action I took about a week ago,” he said.

    “I want to assure you that this is a very hard decision. But the young man standing in for the chairman is one of my boys, and I urge them to join us in the near future.”

    In a similar move, the wife of the former governor of Adamawa State, Zainab Boni-Haruna, has also left PDP.

    The 68-year-old Yobe native announced her resignation at Kukar Gadu community in Fika Local Government Area and declared her decision to join the newly formed ADC coalition.

    “I have come to my home and village to inform them that I have ceased to be a member of the People’s Democratic Party. I have tendered my letter of resignation and handed over my membership card to the party,” she said.

    “I urge them to join the new train of the coalition, called Sabuwar Tafiya (new journey) in Hausa, to elect leaders who will bring better governance to our people.”

    She encouraged her supporters and other well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind the coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    Although the new ADC coalition is barely a week old, it has already begun to attract several politicians in Yobe, particularly those aggrieved within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has told the former Governor of Anambra State not settle for the vice presidential candidate of the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

    Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday night, July 3, Baba-Ahmed argued that Obi’s performance in the last election made him overqualified to be anyone’s VP in 2027.

    “The position of VP is very big. Anyway, I wanted to be, and I was rigged out. But I think Peter Obi should not be a VP, having gotten a disputed 10 million votes,” he said.

    According to him, the coalition’s presidential ticket is effectively between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Obi. However, he insisted Obi should not settle for the VP slot.

    The 55-year-old also rejected the narrative that only a coalition of opposition politicians can defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the 2023 election as proof.

    “It’s all about a narrative that was quickly sold to Nigeria — that to defeat Tinubu, it has to be a coalition. Coalition is good, but in 2023 we defeated APC, PDP. There was no coalition in the Labour Party,” he said.

    He stressed that the real coalition Nigeria needs is not among politicians but at the ballot box.

    “The real coalition we need is in the ballot box. The real coalition is of votes at the ballot box. You protect them all the way to declaration,” he said.

    The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has affirmed his loyalty and commitment to the Labour Party, saying that he is not in any coalition and hasn’t attended any meetings organised by the group nor has he been invited for any.

    Speaking during an interactive session with members of Abia State Global Economic Council in Umuahia, Otti said he is busy doing the work given to him by Abia people and not looking for where to decamp to.

    While reacting to the claim of a crisis in the Labour Party, the Abia State Governor acknowledged the party had a problem, but fought through the Supreme Court to retrieve the party.

    The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has threatened to sack its party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if he refuses to leave the coalition after 48-hour.

    In a statement released, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, explained that the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership remains vehemently opposed to joining the coalition while dismissing members of the coalition as “power mongers whose only interest was self and not the people.”

    The statement reads, “We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them has refused to defect with him.

    Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.

    Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one Party and another leg elsewhere.

    People that in the morning, they will claim to be in the Labour Party and in the evening they are in coalition.

    Nearly 70 percent of Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate. The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of, is not what can be realized from what we are seeing in the coalition.

    These people are opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into circle of power, people who are desperate to continue holding on to power.

    The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory.

    I therefore urge all members of the party to remain loyal and keep the party structure intact ahead of future elections.”

    The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has confirmed adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as his party saying no single group can change Nigeria alone.

    Obi stated this in an X post on Thursday, saying it was a difficult but necessary step for Nigeria’s political future.

    The-63-year-old, said the move was instigated by a deep reflection on the nation’s current challenges and the urgent need for transformative leadership.

    He stated that, “This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward.”

    “Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” said Obi.

    The coalition members, which include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former transport minister Rotimi Amaechi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, officially endorsed the ADC as their political vehicle for 2027 at the unveiling in Abuja on Tuesday.

    It was gathered that Obi proposed to serve a single term in office if elected president under the ADC.

    President Bola Tinubu on Thursday met with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and other members of the state assembly.

    It was gathered that, at the meeting, the President reconciled the parties whose dispute led to the declaration of a state of emergency in the state on March 18.

    During that declaration, Tinubu suspended the governor, his deputy Mrs Ngozi Odu, and the state House of Assembly, citing their inability to work together amidst growing security concerns in their state.

    Although none of the parties disclosed the outcome of the meeting, it appears to be a breakthrough in reconciliation efforts, as photographs released after the talks showed the president, governor, and minister smiling together.

    Sources at the presidency say the meeting helped to reconcile the factions involved in the dispute that has paralysed governance in the oil-rich state.

    A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Atu, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Atu, who represents the Enugu North/South Federal constituency in the Green Chamber, defected to the APC today, June 26. The speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read his defection letter on the floor of the House during plenary.

    In his letter of defection, Atu pointed out the leadership crisis rocking the Labour party as his reason for wanting to decamp. He claimed that the LP crisis had negatively affected his duties.

    Ali Isa, minority whip, protested the defection and demanded that the lawmaker’s seat be declared vacant.
    Abbas acknowledged his point of order but declined to rule on his demand.

    This comes barely 24 hours after two members of the house, PDP’s Peter Akpanke, who represents the Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwara federal constituency of Cross River State, and the Labour Party’s Paul Nnamchi, who represents the Enugu East/Isi-Uzo federal constituency, defected to the APC.

    Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Announcing his defection, Eno thanked the PDP for its past support but said the time had come to take what he called a “progressive step forward.”

    He revealed that the decision followed extensive consultations and was driven by his respect for President Bola Tinubu and a desire to align Akwa Ibom with the Federal Government for sustained development.

    Governor Eno pledged to remain committed to the welfare of the people of Akwa Ibom, emphasisng that his dedication transcends party lines.

    The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he derives joy from stepping on the toes of ‘big men’. He stated this during a media parley in Abuja, on Monday, June 2.

    Wike said all property owners in Abuja who are yet to pay their ground rent must do so or face the music.

    He mentioned that his predecessors in the FCT, including now Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, lacked the courage to compel political bigwigs who own structures in the nation’s capital to pay their annual ground rent.

    “Look at what we are doing differently. People have said that FCT was not working (but) now it is working which means I’m doing things that they (past FCT ministers) refused to do.

    I found out that most of them didn’t have the courage to annoy people, to step on toes but I take joy when I step on the toes of big men; those who say nothing will happen but I say something will happen. It makes me happy.

    All they want me to do is to make decisions against poor people saying nothing will happen to them but I say something will happen. That is why we are making results. If you don’t do the right thing, too bad. I don’t care.”

    The Wike administration in the FCT had published the details of 9,000 debtors in newspapers, asking them to pay their ground rents to avoid the risk of forfeiture.

    The administration subsequently announced on May 23, 2025 that it would take possession of about 5,000 affected properties owing ground rents between 10 and 43 years and began sealing and taking over properties of debtors including the PDP national secretariat, but President Bola Tinubu granted the defaulters a 14-day grace period to settle their outstanding payments and penalties.

    Wike spoke on Monday in Abuja, suggesting he will lead the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential campaign for the next election.

    When asked if he will lead the APC campaign in 2027, Wike said, “I have told you this before, is it because I am in Asiwaju’s presidency?

    “Are you not aware I will lead his campaign in Rivers State? You want me to say no?

    “Are you not aware that he didn’t get up to 10 per cent here, FCT? But he will win here. Are you not aware?

    “Stop asking me questions you know.
    “Of course, you know. Is that hidden.

    “Because I have said the South must produce the president.”
