Outrage In Kano: Police Station Burnt After Suspect Dies In Custody
KANO – Violence erupted in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday, May 26, after a young man, Abdullahi Musa, allegedly died in police custody. His death sparked widespread anger, leading to protests and the burning of the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters.
Residents claim Musa was arrested for a traffic offense and died during interrogation. Eyewitnesses allege the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano, Baba Ali, severely beat Musa, causing his death.
“A young man was beaten mercilessly by the DPO. Later, we heard he d!ed in their custody. That’s what triggered the protest,” a resident identified as Muhammad revealed.
The death ignited fury among local youths, who stormed the police station demanding justice. The protest turned violent when police reportedly opened fire to disperse the crowd, injuring at least two demonstrators: Hassan Salisu Hassan and Muhammad Ibrahim. Both are now at Rano General Hospital.
“In retaliation, the enraged youths began hurling stones at the police officers and eventually set the station on fire.”
Reports indicate DPO Baba Ali also sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa assured the public of an investigation, stating on Facebook: “Incident in Rano — thorough investigation will be conducted by the Grace of God.”
